  • Got a craving for the Horror Diet?

Imported from Safeway

Yesterday was one of those days where I forgot to eat. Until about midnight. Ravenous, I sped over to the local Safeway, attempting to get something reasonably healthy - not exactly an easy thing to do at Safeway. I grabbed a bag of carrots, grimaced at the browning organic cabbage, and strolled over to the meat aisle. And then.

A voice told me to check out the Mexican food section. High carbs? I sneered at the voice. But I walked over there, seeing what I thought was a rather expanded menu of zanahorias, frijoles, and taco shells…about 5 rows worth. And then.

I kept walking down the aisle, and to my shock, horror and delight, I spied this:

McVities digestives

McVities Digestives. European for “tasty chocolate-covered cookie.” Only because you used to be able to get them only in Europe, eating them in America makes them taste divine, simply because of the out-of-country experience. So to see them in my rinkydink neighborhood Safeway made me incredibly verklempt - jumping up and down, singing, dancing, screaming, crying and hugging everyone in sight. Of course it was midnight and no one else was around, but whatev. My feverish state is for what is to blame for the slight blurry haze to the pictures….I was overcome. And then I saw this:

Spotted dick

Now I think I recall treacle being mentioned in a Harry Potter tome. Wikipedia defines it as a charcoal-filtered molasses or an anti-venom, but not a dessert. However, the English palate is a strange one, so maybe it is one over there. However, I do not recall spotted dick on the dining room table at Hogwarts. Maybe in the final book?

Well, can I tell you I was having a parade right then at discovering all this imported food at the local 24-hour market? Like, wow. All they need is Malteasers (like Malt balls but soooo much better) and I’ll be in import heaven.
